What is service information in an obituary? ›

If services are public, include full funeral service information: location, day, and time of visitation, memorial or funeral service, and burial. If services are private, indicate so (for example, "Burial will be private" or "Interment private," or "Private services will be held").

If services are private, indicate “Private services will be held”. If you wish to publish in your local newspaper plan to publish the obituary at least 1-2 days prior to services so that friends and family can make arrangements to attend.

When writing an obituary, leave out details that could be used for identity theft, such as the deceased's date and place of birth, middle name, maiden name and mother's maiden name. And don't include the deceased's home address.
