To start this piece off, I want to give you a brief intro to the energy balance equation..
Dr. Ted Naiman was recently on the podcast. I’ve followed his work for a while..
He breaks down food into two buckets:
Energy fat and carbs.
Nitrogen/repair protein.
His basic thesis is most people do better with more protein followed by a balance of fat and carbs..
This is a nuanced answer to nutrition, which is the right answer to nutrition, but I like his approach precisely because I’ve never thought about nutrition this way, and it has simplified the way I think about food in a lot of ways..
This is my general strategy for a carnivore diet:
Eat most of my nutrition from animals.
Keep a little bit of plant stuff in my diet for variety, microbiome variability, enjoyment and because it is more ancestral appropriate than a 100% meat-only diet.
Within those two, I focus on protein, trying to get about 35-40% of my calories from this macronutrient..
By focusing on protein, I get high satiety, minimal fat gain, and the best chance at more fat loss without lacking performance..
Now the amazing hack that I wish I started when I first stumbled into a carnivore diet is homemade beef jerky..
Here’s why I think jerky is the ultimate hack..
It’s mostly protein.
It’s delicious.
It’s an easy to store protein source you can freeze..
It’s the perfect food when you aren’t in the mood to eat a large steak..
Number 4 is what prompted the video today..
I usually break my fast with a steak, sometimes with ground beef..
Then I’m not that hungry later in the day. Sometimes I’ll eat a small meal and sometimes I’ll eat a larger meal depending on recovery and recent exercise intensity..
Lately, I’ve been less hungry as I’ve been recovering from a minor surgery that has made it so I can’t lift weights..
During this time, I noticed myself leaning closer to an OMAD style of eating in which I fast longer then eat a big dinner, and that’s it for the day..
When this happens, I will often feel the urge to eat, but eating a pound of ground beef or steak is rarely enticing later. (Interesting phenomenon, not sure why that is.).
As a result, my second meal is usually skewed toward something like cheese, avocado, or snacking on whatever easy to eat things are in the kitchen..
This is where jerky comes in like a champion. So I grab a few sticks of jerky and maybe a slice of cheese, and I’m satisfied and done eating for the day..
This keeps me eating more protein. It fills me up. It removes the urge to eat other easy-to-grab foods like nuts or cheat foods in the pantry. I don’t even go there..
If you are trying to lose weight, homemade beef jerky is your literal godsend..
I would recommend keeping a container on the counter at all times. And if you are trying to move to an OMAD style of eating or just want an easy way to up your protein intake, JERKY IS THE ANSWER..

Making your own beef jerky is easier than you think. Unlike most store-bought products, my recipe is free of sugar and preservative. I used minced meat because it’s easier to work with and the end result is more tender than the more common sliced beef jerky..

500 g minced lean beef (1.1 lb).
½ tsp onion powder.
½ tsp garlic powder.

Optional: ½ tsp red pepper flakes.

Since you have asked for more quick healthy protein snack ideas, on this edition of Food Wars, I’m comparing two different brands of beef jerky..
Some of you may be surprised that I eat beef jerky. I say surprised, because if you look at the ingredients, beef jerky doesn’t typically follow my one ingredient rule..
So is beef jerky healthy? Beef jerky can be an exception to the one ingredient rule, if it is primarily comprised of healthy ingredients. Regardless of how many ingredients a food has, the quality of the ingredients is what’s most important..
With that said, beef jerky can be a quick, on the go, high protein snack for you. But before you run to the local convenience or grocery store, please beware..
Not all brands of beef jerky at the grocery store are healthy. In fact, based on the ingredients, some brands of beef jerky may be bad for you..
Here’s how to tell if a brand of beef jerky is bad for you..
Lets compare the beef jerky ingredients..
Beef jerky ingredients option #1:
beef.
water.
sugar.
salt.
corn syrup solids.
modified soy sauce.
hydrolyzed corn dextrin.
soy protein.
monosodium glutamate (i.e. msg).
maltodextrin.
flavorings.
hydrogenated soybean oil.
silicon dioxide.
sodium nitrates.
Then there are a few other ingredients that I can’t even pronounce..
Beef jerky ingredients option #2:
Beef.
Sugar.
Water.
Beef stock.
Salt.
Spices and flavorings.
Smoke flavor.
Celery powder.
Vinegar.
Based on these ingredients, I think it’s pretty obvious which brand of beef jerky is healthier. If it’s not obvious, it’s beef jerky option #2..
Beef jerky option #1 is a prime example of a brand of beef jerky that contains unhealthy ingredients. Therefore, I wouldn’t recommend this brand of beef jerky in your diet..
Some of the key unhealthy ingredients to avoid are:
Corn syrup solids.
Monosodium glutamate (msg).
Hydrogenated soybean oil.
In particular, always avoid foods that contain hydrogenated soybean oil as it’s terrible for your health..
Then when you look at the healthier beef jerky option, the label says it contains, what they call, “natural ingredients”. Having this on the nutrition label may be a little deceiving though. The reason is, the second ingredient in the healthier brand of beef jerky contains 5g of sugar per serving. Even though in a perfect world, this beef jerky may not be the best natural whole food snack, it is a decent on the go, high protein snack option..
Healthier brands of beef jerky can be a good source of protein, that’s lower in carbohydrates, and unhealthy inflammatory fats..
Bottom line: is beef jerky bad for you?
If I want you to take one thing away from this post, it is this. Always look at the ingredients. Just because the label says it’s a specific type of food, it doesn’t mean all brands are created the same..
You can also add in a handful of nuts, like macadamia nuts, to make it an even more satiating snack. This quick snack combo will provide you with a good source of protein and hunger crushing healthy fats..

Quick tips for shopping the beef jerky section healthily and properly, whether you’re keto or not. So we’re at a really simple Walmart Neighborhood Market. This just works as a general substitute for any grocery store. And I figured it’s a great place to show you where you can find the healthier kinds of beef jerky..
Now there’s a lot of different things that we can point out, a lot of different things we can pick apart, but the options are going to be somewhat limited at a Walmart. But I still want to show you the simple things to look for, so that when you go into a grocery store you can get the highest quality beef jerky, turkey jerky, salmon jerky, whatever. So you know exactly what you’re putting in your body and you get the utmost results. So let’s head on in and take a look, and hopefully not get kicked out..
Well, it turns out when zonulin releases, it triggers a cascade of immunological responses within the body that elevate additional antibodies. So basically in an effort to combat the zonulin, the body elevates the same antibodies that would attack your body in the case of specific illnesses, which just so happened to affect your thyroid. So what this means is that when you’re consuming soy, even in tiny, tiny amounts, for a long period of time after that, it affects your thyroid and can actually slow your thyroid down..
These larger food particles end up being basically foreign invaders to the body, as far as the body’s concerned. So when these foreign invaders come in, what happens?
White blood cells and the immune system attack them, which also makes your immune system attack your brain, attack everything else. So you have inflammation everywhere. You end up getting these issues, makes you feel sick. So sugar and the soy. So we just got to be careful with the budget ones..
So, perfect example is if you go to a buffet, and you just feel like the food just is hitting the spot, so good, more than normal. Well that’s because what MSG does is it lights up the glutamate side of your brain. And the glutamate side of your brain makes you feel like something tastes better than it is..
So this is a bad sign. Whenever you see MSG, you would usually think that they’re trying to hide something. So you might be wondering like, “Okay, you’re telling me all this stuff to avoid. What can I eat?”.
So when we have this and we have that mechanically separated chicken, huge red flag. Okay? And most beef sticks have that. So be careful. But also textured soy flour, then corn syrup. Really nasty stuff in this, really nasty. And let’s take a look at Walmart brand just to get an idea. A Great Value brand..
Yep. Same thing. Beef, pork, mechanically separated chicken. Most snack sticks, you just need to stay away from. What’s this one? This one looks a little better. Let’s see. Nope. Turkey, mechanically separated turkey. That’s what gives it… like chicken nugget. You can see the grossness in that. You’re almost better off having a hot dog..
So I think we’re in good shape. I don’t even think we need to hit another grocery store. I’m not here to tout specific brands. I’m not here to do anything like that. I just wanted to show what you should avoid, and what you should be looking for when you’re buying jerky. So no sense wasting a bunch of your time. We’re going to go ahead and we’re going to check out..
This way we can get some good B roll footage and be able to show this stuff close up. But honestly, the best place to be able to find jerky is going to be a health food store, because they’re going to have the good stuff. The regular grocery stores, you really have to filter through. Okay, this was a good indicator of how 95% of what was there would just be a deal breaker, game changer in a negative way for keto..
